Abbey House is a residential development in the heart of Bermondsey, offering 51
apartment units, 35% to be affordable housing. The landscape design of
the podium deck is inspired by the fluvial waters of the nearby River
Thames.
Semi-mature multi-stem silver birches and a variety of understory
planting recreate the characteristics of a small urban woodland.
R-LA always takes a multi-layered holistic approach right from a project’s
inception. Specialists in GIS software, R-LA begins the design process with a
detailed desktop study of the site and the surrounding area which ensures that
any risks, such as flooding from surface water run-off, or priority habitats
that must be protected, do not present an unnecessary and costly surprise
further down the design process. R-LA looks at public access and the multiple
deprivation index to ensure that all communities are considered when developing
proposals. Through this detailed research, R-LA is able to identify
opportunities for the site to implement a SuDS strategy which in turn will boost
Biodiversity Net Gain and Carbon sequestration.
